The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Neurological Devices Panel today voted seven to five to recommend approval with conditions of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy for Epilepsy from Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) as adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures in adults with medically refractory epilepsy. If the FDA follows the recommendation of the panel, the therapy will be approved for the treatment of epilepsy in patients who have continued seizures with inadequate response to currently available epilepsy treatments.

12.03.2010  Genentech Provides Update on Phase III Study of Avastin in Men With Late Stage Prostate Cancer

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY), announced today the topline results of a Phase III trial led by the U.S. Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) investigating the use of Avastin® (bevacizumab) in combination with docetaxel chemotherapy and prednisone in men with late stage prostate cancer (hormone-refractory / HRPC). The study, known as CALGB 90401, did not meet its primary objective of extending overall survival compared to chemotherapy and prednisone alone. A preliminary assessment of safety performed by CALGB has shown adverse events that have been previously observed in pivotal trials with Avastin. Data from the study will be submitted by CALGB for presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, June 4 to 8, 2010.

12.03.2010  Cyanotech Receives Temporary Non-Compliance Notice from Nasdaq Related to Its Number of Independent Directors

Cyanotech Corporation (Nasdaq Capital Market: CYAN) has been notified by the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel that it is not in compliance with its continued listing requirements under Nasdaq Listing Rules 5605(b)(1) and 5605(c)(2)(A) due to having only three independent directors of six total directors on its Board and fewer than three independent directors on its audit committee, while David I. Rosenthal serves as Interim President and CEO, as announced on March 1, 2010. Mr. Rosenthal has resigned from the audit committee in order to accept his interim appointment as an executive officer. Nasdaq rules require that the Board be comprised of a majority of independent directors and that the audit committee be comprised of only independent directors of which there must be at least three. The notification indicated that so long as Cyanotech provides an acceptable plan within 45 days to regain a majority of independent directors to the Board and to add a third independent member to the audit committee, NASDAQ will consider granting Cyanotech an exception for up to 180 days from March 8, 2010. Cyanotech intends to provide a plan acceptable to Nasdaq within the required time period.

11.03.2010  Fox Systems Offers Clarification of Relationship with Fox Insurance Company

Fox Systems today issued a statement that it is not related to Fox Insurance Company. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that effective March 9, 2010, it terminated a contract with Fox Insurance Company, which provided services under the Medicare Part D program in 21 states. The Affiliated Fox Group, Inc. (AFGI), the former holding company for Fox Systems, sold all of its interests in Fox Insurance Company and its Part D contract with CMS, to Fox Rx, Inc., a New York based firm, in February 2006. Since this divestiture, Fox Systems has had no role for the provision of services under the Medicare Part D program, including any of the alleged program violations identified by CMS.
